Taking Your Kitten Home

|
When you decide that you would like to have a kitten you will need to consider some of the basic requirements that you will need to have ready. All pets must leave our home in a suitable cat cage. This is for the safety and comfort of of you, your family and most importantly the kitten on this journey. Cats should not travel unrestrained in a car. If you do not have one I have always some on hand that are airline approved. A soft bed for you kitten to sleep in is also a must.. Pet Snugs are manufactured locally at a cost starting from $35 or Adorable Paws (contact Colleen on 0418433669) Alternatively beds of all sizes and price ranges can be purchased from pet shops and discount stores.
To protect your furnishings a good sturdy scratching post is a great item to have ready These can usually be bought at cat shows throughout the local area or contact Richard on 07 55982691. They can also be purchased from pet shops and discount stores.
A selection of simple toys will be great for your kitten to amuse themselves with when you are away from the home. Birmans love to play and a variety of toys will keep them amused. These can range from something as simple as a ball of scrunched up paper, ping pong balls to commercially available cat toys in all shapes and sizes.
You will need to provide clean bowls for all meals and there are many available. I use ant-proof bowls for both wet and dry food. Bowls can be plastic, ceramic or stainless steel. You must always have fresh water available for your cat. All of our kittens leave here with a comprehensive diet care sheet advising you of what we feed and the types of food offered. It is a good idea to adhere to this diet as closely as possible so that your kitten doesn't have to try to adjust too quickly to different foods that they are not used to eating as this can create tummy upsets. New foods should be introduced gradually. A premium dry food is recommended. Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin and Advance are some of the brands that I use. I find that some of the cheaper supermarket varieties are not as well balanced as the premium foods and contain many more artificial colourings and flavourings. We also feed raw meat. This is generally readily available from supermarkets or you can purchase cheaper cuts of human grade meat from your butcher or supermarket.Meat should have minimal preservatives as these can damages some cats' health. You will need to have a suitable litter tray, and litter available. We use and recommend Oz-Pet you will also find a supply nearby if you visit theirsite www.oz-pet.net.au . We also use Breeders Choice which is readily available at pet stores and supermarkets.
Our kittens have been litter trained by their mothers and are used to using a litter tray. We do advise that you need to show your kitten where this tray is to be placed several times through out the first day to ensure there are no accidents. Overnight we recommend that you confine your kitten close to its litter tray so that it doesn't become lost and confused.Cats are naturally clean animals and often will not use a litter tray that is soiled, sosolids should be removed frequently and it should be thoroughly cleaned often with a household grade disinfectant.
